Does a 0% instalment purchase count as a loan? Does it show in the Credit Bureau?

Short answer · Yes

Yes. What a store calls "0% instalments" is legally a consumer loan from a bank (or non-bank lender); the store or manufacturer pays the interest to the bank. It is reported to the Credit Bureau, counts toward your debt burden, and late payments trigger penalties and a negative record. The difference: you are not charged interest (as long as you keep to the terms), and the goods are sometimes priced above the cash price.

Instalment purchases have become the main way to buy electronics, furniture and phones in Azerbaijan, and many consider them "not a loan". That misconception costs money in two places: on a mortgage application the bank adds 3–4 small instalment plans to your debt burden, and a one-month delay shows in your history like any loan delinquency. On the other hand, an instalment plan paid on time is the cheapest way to build a first credit history. Below we explain the mechanism, the hidden costs and the right way to use it.

What to watch for?

  • ✓ Ask the seller for the cash price separately: if it differs, the "0%" is really interest equal to that difference.
  • ✓ Do not open several instalment plans at once; each counts as a separate loan in your debt burden and shrinks your mortgage limit.
  • ✓ Instalment cards (banks' split-payment cards) are interest-free at partner stores, but check the annual fee and the rate outside the partner network.
  • ✓ On a late payment the 0% is lost and the bank may charge regular interest retroactively; find that clause in the contract.

Frequently asked questions

If instalments are 0%, how does the bank earn?

The store or manufacturer pays the bank a commission (5–15% of the sale); that cost is often built into the price of the goods. So an "interest-free" purchase is really prepaid interest.

Can I close an instalment plan early?

Yes, without penalty, but you save nothing since the interest is already zero. Closing early only makes sense to reduce your debt burden.

If I stop paying a phone instalment, will the phone be locked?

Under some operator or store instalment plans the device can be restricted remotely; under bank instalments the usual loan procedures apply (penalty, Credit Bureau, demand).
