What happens to the collateral if a pawn loan is not repaid?
After the term ends you can still redeem or extend during the waiting period stated in the contract (usually 10–30 days); once it passes, the pawnshop gains the right to sell the item and the sale settles the debt. If the sale proceeds exceed the debt, you are entitled to the difference (per the contract); if less, most contracts make no further claim. There is usually no court, collector or Credit Bureau record.
This is precisely the "advantage" of a pawn loan: your risk is limited to the collateral and the debt does not follow you for years. But it also means losing the item easily, especially gold that is a family heirloom. The law does not let the pawnshop sell the collateral immediately: a waiting period, notification and sale procedure must be in the contract. - ✓ Go to the pawnshop before the term ends: paying only the interest and extending protects the item; many lose their gold simply because they do not know this.
- ✓ When extensions repeat, the interest approaches the item's value: after the third extension consider borrowing elsewhere to close it.

Can the pawnshop take me to court?
Under a standard pawn contract the debt is limited to the collateral and there is no court claim. Only if the contract has a shortfall clause and the sale did not cover the debt is it theoretically possible.
How many days after the term does the item get sold?
After the waiting period in the contract, usually 10–30 days. Some pawnshops warn by SMS, but it is not mandatory; track the date yourself.
Can I get a sold item back?
