What are car loan rates and which bank is cheapest?

Short answer · Yes

New-car loan rates are usually 10–16% a year, used-car rates 14–20%; official dealers' joint campaigns with banks offer "subsidised" 0–8% rates, but the car's price or an insurance condition may offset that. The cheapest bank depends on your profile (income, down payment, salary card); the table below compares current offers by effective rate.

The real cost of a car loan has three parts: the rate, the insurance and the dealer price. In a "0% interest" campaign the car may cost 5–10% more than the cash price, meaning the interest is hidden in the price. The right comparison method: bring the cash price, insurance and interest cost for the same car down to one number. This page gives that calculation and banks' current offers.

What to watch for?

  • ✓ Ask the dealer for the cash price and the credit price separately; if they differ, treat the difference as interest.
  • ✓ Your salary bank may discount car loans too; the dealer's "partner bank" is not always the cheapest.
  • ✓ Cap the term at 36 months: 60 months lowers the payment but adds a lot of interest and insurance cost.
  • ✓ Raising the down payment to 30% cuts the rate by 2–3 points at some banks and relaxes the insurance requirement.

Frequently asked questions

Is a "0% car loan" really interest-free?

The dealer or manufacturer subsidises the interest, but the car is often sold above the cash price and insurance is mandatory. Compare the total cost with a cash purchase.

What is the effective rate on a car loan?

The annual total of interest, fees and mandatory insurance. A nominal 12% can be an effective 18–20% with insurance; compare the effective rate shown in the contract.

Can I repay a car loan early?

Yes; penalties are usually not applied and interest is charged only for the days used. After closure the pledge is removed from the traffic police registration.
